Water and Sanitation (WASH) Expert

In the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti on January 2010 and following relief work, the Swiss Red Cross (SRC) is implementing a comprehensive rehabilitation and reconstruction programme in several areas of Haiti. Near Léogane, the SRC is reconstructing houses. A water and sanitation project including hygiene components in the same area is planned.  

Therefore we are urgently looking for a Delegate as a 

Water and Sanitation (WASH) Expert 

Based on the framework provided by the SRC an under the general supervision of the Country Representative and in close collaboration with the other team members, the WASH Expert assumes the overall responsibility for the planning, coordination and implementation of the WASH project. 

Based in and starting date:  Léogane / 10th October 2011 or by arrangement 

Role and Responsibilities 

§     Mobilization of the population to improve hygiene and participate in water and sanitation construction and maintenance work

§     Organization and supervision of a detailed assessment of households

§     Determination of exact sites and types of sanitation and hygiene infrastructure

§     Preparation of a Plan of Action including the participation of the local community

§     Guiding, controlling and supervising the execution of the construction of latrines, reservoirs and rainwater harvesting systems

§     Ensuring technical and functional checks of construction work

§     Organisational planning (staff, community involvement, training and participation)

§     Coordination with the government and other stakeholders including national and international NGOs. 

Requirements 

§     Engineering background or background in social sciences or health related sciences with experience in constructing latrines, reservoirs and rainwater harvesting systems

§     Minimum 2 years of professional experience in development/post-disaster rehabilitation work

§     Experience with participatory methods

§     Initiative, flexible, cultural sensitive, and able to work under pressure in a complex environment

§     Team spirit

§     Strong negotiation and social skills

§     Fluent in French (working language), English is an asset.  

Duration of contract: 12 months, starting 10th of October 2011 or according to agreement. The contract is extendable, depending on the development of the project.
