Organizational Description:
Rural Development Institute (RDI) was established as a Trust on 18 May
2008 in order to carry out various programs related to the alleviation of
poverty particularly through issues related to land. Its goals are to
provide secure land rights to the poor. Its theory of change
incorporates field research in order to inform and assist in policy,
legislation and implementation of schemes and projects related to land
and the poor. It works in support of the national and state government
offices that are responsible for the implementation of these programs.
Currently, RDI is working in four states: Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh,
Odisha and West Bengal and has the National office in New Delhi. The
National Office facilities the development of new programmes , undertakes
research and has the oversight role in program management

Basic Description of the Position
This individual will be primarily responsible for the preparation and
implementation of a communications strategy relating to RDI’s work in the
state of Karnataka to help poor, rural families obtain secure land
rights. The strategy will include preparation - in coordination with the
Director Communications, RDI’s New Delhi National Office, in addition to
the State Director, and dissemination of various external and internal
communications and knowledge products intended for broad audiences
including: fact sheets; case studies, field notes, press kits; newspaper
articles brochures; stories; etc. The individual will also be
responsible for editing, formatting, and otherwise improving various
project communications intended for more specific audiences such as
Indian policymakers, project partners (including funders), or RDI’s
National office, including: policy briefs; power point presentations;
technical reports; reports to project funders; reports to RDI’s National
office as relevant.
Core Responsibilities:

Fully understand and be supportive of RDI’s mission, RDI
strategic objectives, and Project objectives.

Responsible for preparing and implementing state
communication strategy and plan

Provide regular inputs for strategic interventions and
opportunities for advocacy on land issues at state, national levels.

Responsible for internal communication including
preparing updates for review at various levels.

Responsible for developing communication materials –
both internal and external as and when required.

Responsible for knowledge management within the
organization.

Provide timely and regular content, inputs, stories and
related products for outreach through RDI-India and global websites,
partner/government websites, and social media.

Responsible for media planning and relation
The above are the core responsibilities that are indicative and may not
include the entire gamut of work of the Communications Manager. Emergent
areas of responsibilities may be added given the specifics tasks listed
below.
Specific responsibilities:

Prepare State communications strategy with input from
state and national office and periodically revise state communications
plan in consultation with Director Communications for communications to
be consistent with RDI mission, RDI strategic objectives and project
objectives.

Prepare and share with state and national office,
regular communications plans to support program and strategic
communications goals and aligned with annual plans.

Implement communications plan for projects and
coordinate with other team members to develop quality products that
help achieve program goals and objectives.

Provide regular updates for review to National office on
project communications and progress. Participate in and support
meetings and workshops as relevant on RDI national communications.

Prepare various internal and external communications
material required for the communications strategy as per RDI guidelines

Prepare project related communications materials and
approaches as relevant as per RDI guidelines.
-
Research media and communications avenues for project
objectives and outcomes where necessary. Organize, coordinate and
foster media relations as relevant, including the development and
maintenance of a media contacts list.

Obtain, understand, and effectively communicate and
disseminate project research results to a range of audiences to further
advocacy on land rights. Maintain a database of key audiences and
stakeholders in the state.

Obtain, through photography/video and other media, human
interest stories related to project outcomes.

Coordinate workshops and other briefing events and
project workshops.

Play a proactive role and support in implementation of
Communications and related guidelines in state offices.
-
Edit, format, and otherwise improve project
communications prepared by other project staff intended for
policymakers, RDI partners, or RDI’s National office.

In coordination with Delhi-based National Director –
Communications, support the implementation of RDI’s overall strategic
communications plan, especially as it relates to the state and India.

Input into and ensure intra organization (State-India
and Seattle) communications under guidance of Director Communications,
India, on state communications priorities, production and especially
distribution of all communications projects, material and initiatives
in a timely manner.
Required Qualifications
Education:
Master’s degree in a related field. Additional degree and/or
certification preferred.
Experience:
A minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience that
includes the performance of some or all of the duties described above.
Excellent writing, communication and research skills required.
Self-motivation and ability to set and meet goals; exacting attention to
detail; working knowledge of budgets and financials; flexibility and
ability to work simultaneously on multiple projects.
Knowledge of internet-based research, rural development and poverty
issues a plus.
Work Habits:
Include but are not limited to accuracy, efficiency, thoroughness,
regularity, timeliness, neatness, orderliness, and punctuality. A strong
drive for excellence in work products and personal performance.
Interpersonal Skills:
Ability to work in support of and collaboratively with a range of people
at all levels, including RDI employees both foreign and domestic, Project
management team, RDI donors, RDI partners including government officials,
visitors, contractors and subcontractors, outside vendors and services
suppliers, and other administrative staff members.
Teamwork Skills:
Ability to both lead and work as a member of teams, including consensus
building, communications, and leadership skills.
Communications Skills:
Superior abilities to communicate in English (writing, orally, and
non-verbally). Fluent in local state language; proficiency in Hindi.
Includes an ability to make and use distinctions as to types, frequency,
tenor, and levels of communications, depending upon the circumstances,
audience, recipient, and content.
Language Skills:
Fluency in English and local language required.
Software Skills:
Ability to proficiently use Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook,
Publisher, and other software.
