Job Title: Senior Manager – Kolkata office
Employment Status: Regular Full-time
Starting Salary: DOE. Final compensation will be based the individual's work history, experience and educational background.
Place of Performance: Kolkata, West Bengal.
Travel Requirements: Frequent travel throughout rural West Bengal; occasional travel to other Indian states; infrequent international travel.
Supervisor: West Bengal State Director.
Basic Description of the Position
Deputy Lead in-country position for an international project to help poor, rural families obtain land and opportunity (“Project”). Responsible for managing the RDI Kolkata office staff, assisting the WB State Project Director, and providing technical direction to as well as coordinating the activities of the West Bengal project consultants and partners.
Core Duties:
• Fully understand and support RDI’s mission, RDI strategic objectives, and Project objectives.
• Provide hands on leadership, direction and implementation of project objectives and outcomes.
• Research, select, and engage appropriate NGOs in partnerships to perform project task and ensure outcomes.
• Research, select and engage appropriate consultants to perform project tasks and ensure outcomes.
• Manage and mentor RDI WB staff of 6 persons.
• Work closely with WB State Project Director to assess and communicate to Seattle the project’s status, outcomes, successes, challenges, timelines, finances and direction.
• Ensure that the RDI WB office operates with efficiency, effectiveness and in a professional manner.
• Responsible for maintaining and strengthening a wide range of stakeholder relationships: state and local governments, NGOs, SHGs, donor organizations, etc.
Required Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in business, law, agriculture, social sciences or related field; advanced degree highly desirable. Training and/or direct experience in land tenure issues, agriculture or other social sciences.
Experience: A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience that includes the performance of some or all of the duties described above. Project management experience. Experience working with various stakeholder groups, particularly those in the governmental and non-profit sectors. Excellent writing, communication and research skills required. Self-motivation and ability to set and meet goals; exacting attention to detail and working knowledge of budgets and financials; flexibility and ability to work simultaneously on multiple projects.
Experience with internet-based research, international affairs, land tenure issues, natural resource management, rural development and livelihoods, agricultural extension and/or poverty issues a plus.
Work Habits: Include but are not limited to accuracy, efficiency, thoroughness, regularity, timeliness, neatness, orderliness and punctuality. A strong drive for excellence in work product and personal performance.
Interpersonal Skills: Ability to work in support of and collaboratively with a range of people at all levels, including RDI employees both foreign and domestic, RDI project management team, RDI donors, RDI partners including government officials, visitors, contractors and subcontractors, outside vendors and services suppliers, and other administrative staff members.
Teamwork Skills: Ability to receive supervision as well as lead and work as a member of teams, including consensus building, communications, and leadership skills.
Communications Skills: Superior abilities to communicate in English (writing, orally, and non-verbally). Includes an ability to make and use distinctions as to types, frequency, tenor, and levels of communications, depending upon the circumstances, audience, recipient, and content.
Fluency in Bengali required.
Software Skills: Ability to proficiently use Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and other software.
