Coordinator – Thematic Initiatives

 Grade:   Cadre

Director - Policy and Programme

World Water Council, Headquarters, Marseille, France
Contract
: 100% – CDD (limited term contract with view to evolve to a CDI)

Under the general supervision of the Director-Policy and Programme, the Coordinator – Thematic Initiatives will undertake the following tasks: 

A. Thematic background analysis

·         Prepare thematic analysis to underpin the Council’s work with large water users inside and outside the water sector;

·         Prepare thematic background studies for the Council’s engagement with other major sectors such as energy, agriculture and on issues such as climate change, sanitation, financing and water footprints; 

B. Thematic initiative development and implementation

·         Lead the development and implementation of the Council’s initiative on sanitation, wastewater and health engaging with members and partners in and outside the water sector;

·         Lead the development and implementation of the Council’s initiative on water, food and energy engaging with members and partners in and outside the water sector;

·         Support the smooth running of the relevant Council Working Groups by convening teleconferences, tracking activity plans, contributing to reporting back at Board meetings and providing background briefings;

·         Prepare all briefings, reports and other materials required for implementing the thematic initiatives;

·         Develop new activities to engage on thematic issues in consultation with Board members;

·         Secure future funding from a variety of sources for new and existing thematic initiatives working with sector specialist and leaders; 

C. External relations and communications

·         Communicate effectively with sector specialists and leaders, Council members, partners and staff on the Council’s political initiatives;

·         Produce clear and concise written outputs in English for use at all levels, including for publication;

·         Provide regular input to update the thematic initiatives part of the Council website;

 D. 6th World Water Forum Political Process

·         Provide input into the 6th World Water Forum - Thematic Programme development, including supporting preparation of background briefs, meetings and other communications;

·         Act as the Council secretariat focal point for the 6th World Water Forum thematic programme process;

E. Administration and finance

·         Work effectively as part of cross-secretariat teams to deliver outputs to a high standard and on time;

·         Manage and track budgets for specific activities ensuring that budgets are adhered to and that rigorous financial accountability is maintained;

·         Supervise effectively and efficiently external inputs into programme activities, including by consultants and interns, and ensure that high quality products are delivered by third parties;

·         Develop and use a detailed and time-bound personal work-plan to guide activities and to deliver results;

·         Contribute to the overall management of programme activities and, when necessary, attend and report to management meetings and the Bureau/Board;

·         Supervise the work of interns attached to the programme and ensure that they are well mentored;

·         Contribute to the team spirit and ethos of the WWC Secretariat and build and maintain strong relationships with members and partners;

 Candidate Requirements

 Essential

·         Relevant Masters degree or higher qualification (in sciences, social or political sciences or humanities);

·         At least five years work experience on water related issues, and strong understanding of the agricultural or energy sectors;

·         Experience in developing analyses on specific issues and synthesizing background papers in a short period of time;

·         Experience in developing and coordinating thematic initiatives with a range of partners;

·         Successful fundraising, and narrative and financial reporting to donors;

·         Excellent presentation and communications skills and the ability to write clear and concise issues briefs and reports in English; 

Desirable experience

·         Experience in working as a team to deliver key outputs on time and to budget.

·         Besides fluency in English, knowledge of French and other languages;

·         Demonstrable understanding of major policy issues surrounding water management and development;

·         Experience in working on complex multi-stakeholder processes.
