Senior Research Scientist - Tropical Fisheries & Development

The WorldFish Center, headquartered on the island of Penang, Malaysia, is a world-class scientific research organization. Our mission is to reduce poverty and hunger by improving fisheries and aquaculture. We have offices in 8 countries and engage in collaborative research with more than 200 partners in more than 25 countries. The Center is a nonprofit organization and a member of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).

A unique opportunity has arisen for gifted individuals to contribute to the mission of the Center.

Key Responsibilities
• Providing scientific leadership and vision in the development of new research and knowledge management opportunities relating to tropical fisheries associated ecosystems;
• Designing, developing and submitting project proposals relevant to the management and sustainable use of coral reefs in developing countries;
• Developing collaborative arrangements with advanced scientific institutions and national research systems to increase the outputs for agreed research projects;
• As part of a team, providing strategic direction and science support for the development of ReefBase – the world’s premier online source of information on the sustainable use and management of coral reefs;
• Publishing results of research in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and disseminating in web pages, newsletters and other popular media;
• Representing the Center at relevant high level scientific fora; and
• Contributing to strategic science discussions and the development of science directions within the Natural Resources Management discipline and relevant regional strategies and global initiatives.

Skills and Abilities
• Demonstrated research innovation, publications in internationally refereed journals and the application of research to management issues;
• Strong quantitative skills in statistical and spatial analysis, and relevant computer programs;
• Excellent project management skills, including planning organization, and budgeting;
• Ability to work effectively in diverse cultural contexts and managing several projects simultaneously; and
• Proficient in English language – writing and orally.

Qualifications and Experiences
• PhD in coral reef ecology, tropical fisheries, or related discipline with five year’s research experience in tropical marine ecosystems; and
• Experience in assembling, organizing and analyzing information from a variety of sources and disciplines and synthesizing these to identify emergent issues and ideas; and
• Experience in multi-disciplinary and multi-organization and multi-country projects.
