The Person and the Job
If you are a dynamic and creative person with a great grasp of agriculture and water issues in East and Southern Africa then you could be just the person we need: a Coordinator for the IMAWESA (Improved Management of Agricultural Water in East and Southern Africa) network. This seeks to improve pro-poor agricultural water management through collaborative learning, knowledge sharing, capacity building and enhancing the use of research results in development programs and policy. This position reports to the Regional Director Africa and will be based either at IWMI’s East Africa and Nile Basin Office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia or at IWMI’s Southern Africa Office in Pretoria, South Africa.

IMAWESA aims to:
Build on the solid foundations established during its first phase and develop and maintain an active learning and knowledge sharing network of institutions and agricultural water management (AWM) professionals. As time goes on the network will increasingly be owned by its own members. IMAWESA is funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

As Coordinator, you will:
Liaise with network partners to facilitate learning and knowledge sharing on innovations/good practices in AWM through activities such as: learning alliances, communities of practice and other strategic approaches and tools, all based on country needs and opportunities. You will facilitate policy dialogue and link researchers to development practice, with a focus on IFAD programs. Also, you will lead the development and roll-out of a strategy to build partnerships that ensure the long-term sustainability of IMAWESA as a regional AWM knowledge network.

To achieve IWAWESA’s aims you will:
• Lead the implementation of the IMAWESA-II network, develop the work plan, monitoring & evaluation tools, budgets and the human and
material support
• Strengthen and expand the IMAWESA knowledge sharing network by attracting new partners and decentralize it into a collaborative
‘network of networks’
• Facilitate access to lessons, good practice, expertise and advice on AWM through the network: using a range of approaches/tools including learning alliances, communities of practice, peer-to-peer exchange and others appropriate to the target audiences
• Facilitate evidence-based policy dialogue on AWM through support in selected countries and by exposing policymakers to relevant
lessons/experience
• Finalize and implement a partnership building strategy to support and guide the expansion of the network, in particular, developing
partnerships with African institutions for scaling up of AWM lessons
• Link the IMAWESA network with other AWM projects including those of IWMI and CGIAR partners
• Link relevant IFAD-funded projects, developing relationships with IFAD Country Programme Managers, Country Officers and project staff,
and ensuring that the projects are sources and beneficiaries of lessons and good practice
• Provide implementation support, encouraging peer-to-peer learning across projects, facilitating access to appropriate training, as well as bringing research results to projects; organize meetings, seminars, workshops, conferences, as and when needed

You must:
Hold a higher degree related to agricultural water management along with an established reputation in the science of AWM in sub-Saharan Africa, especially in the East and South, built on several years experience. Ideally, you will be familiar with pro-poor AWM issues and understand small-scale irrigation, soil/crop/water relations and management of multiple stakeholders. You will know about policy making, key institutions, decision-makers and practitioners in more than one African region and how to spread good practice lessons.

You will have skills in:
Managing projects, including budget monitoring and extensive experience of coordinating, networking and facilitating learning and knowledge sharing – and have written about your achievements for international journals and publications. It would be helpful if you could write and converse in French as well as having excellent written and spoken English. Finally, you will be an excellent communicator who builds relationships quickly and easily.

This is an internationally recruited position with a competitive salary and benefits package, which includes a housing allowance, transport, education, shipping assistance, annual home leave, retirement, and health insurance package. IWMI’s policy is to appoint staff initially on three-year contracts which are subject to renewal, depending on performance and the institute’s needs. This position will also require travel to the regions IWMI works in.
