Post Doctoral Fellow – Quantitative Groundwater Hydrology
(Hyderabad, India)
If you have obtained a PhD in groundwater hydrology or related field and wish to contribute to improving the management of natural resources in the developing countries of Asia and Africa then a Post-Doctoral position with IWMI could be just the right assignment as you begin your professional career.
The International Water Management Institute (www.iwmi.org) is a non-profit, scientific organization engaged in research and capacity building activities for developing countries. Our mission is to overcome poverty through the better management of land and water resources. Working with diverse partners and supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (www.cgiar.org), IWMI seeks to translate its research findings into actionable recommendations for policymakers, resource managers and poor rural communities. IWMI is based in Colombo, Sri Lanka and has regional offices in 12 countries in Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.
IWMI is one of the 15 research centers of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (www.cgiar.org), IWMI scientists study water management and policy issues across Asia and Africa, and they contribute frequently to international discussions regarding water resources, agriculture, food security, poverty, and the environment. IWMI Post-Doctoral Fellows work closely with international scientists and national partners on an exciting array of research and policy questions, striving always to enhance understanding of natural resource management with a view toward reducing poverty and improving livelihoods.
Location:
The position will be based at IWMI South Asia Regional office in Hyderabad, India and report to the Senior Hydrogeologist.
Job Purpose:
To carry out data-driven, groundwater modeling studies across a range of spatial scales and settings at various locations across South Asia to better understand groundwater processes and offer practical solutions in a multidisciplinary research environment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. To undertake groundwater modeling to quantify water balance components and perform scenario analyses in problems related to:
o surface-ground water interactions;
o watershed development programs/managed aquifer recharge;
o climate change and land-use impacts;
2. Apply GIS and remote sensing tools, methods and datasets for mapping watershed development and climate-related impacts on land use and geo-hydrology;
3. Design and implement and/or supervise data collection and analysis;
4. Prepare research reports, journal articles for publication in addition to conference/seminar papers.
Selection Criteria:
The following outlines the attributes required and the criteria against which applications will be assessed:
Qualifications:
ESSENTIAL
• PhD in the field of hydrogeology/environmental/irrigation/civil engineering or a closely related water resources discipline.
Experience & Knowledge:
ESSENTIAL
• High level competency in groundwater modeling and the use of quantitative methods to solving groundwater problems
• Experience in field research and translation of findings into innovative conceptual and/or quantitative models
• Competency in application of GIS and remote sensing techniques to hydrological and geo-hydrological problems
Skills & Abilities:
ESSENTIAL
• Experience with numerical groundwater (flow) models, preferably in a range of settings and spatial scales
• Ability to capture and collate complex datasets and synthesize to address real-world issues
• Ability to independently design and conduct field research
• Strong analytical skills and a learning attitude
• Ability to work in team with people from different cultural and professional backgrounds
• Strong communication skills
• Excellent oral and writing skills in English
• Record of publications including in international peer reviewed journals
• Willingness to live and work in developing countries, particularly India
• Willingness to travel
• Desire to better understand the water issues confronting the poor
DESIRABLE
• Knowledge of soil-water or surface water hydrology principles and models
• Experience in conservative/reactive solute transport modelling
• Experience with modern software languages and code development
Salary and Benefits:
Post doctoral contract is available for two years and is non-renewable.
