The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Forage Genebank Manager who will be responsible for ensuring the safe custodianship of ILRI’s collection of forage resources to meet commitments under the ILRI’s agreement with the Governing Body of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA).
Duties & Responsibilities:
Managing conservation and documentation of the collection to international standards
Coordinating regeneration of accessions
Coordinating viability and germplasm health monitoring
Managing distribution of seeds from the in trust collection in accordance with provisions under the ITPGRFA
Planning and managing characterization activities, including nutritional characterization
Organizing and managing activities and resources in the genebank and nutritional laboratories
Stratification of the collection to ensure the most efficient management whilst maintaining standards of quality and safety
Liaises with genetic resources staff from the International Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) and the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), contributes to the functioning of a CGIAR-wide forage collection
Developing funding proposals with colleagues and monitoring progress against donor funded projects
Education and experience
PhD in agronomy, genetic resources, plant physiology or related subject
5 years of experience related to managing genetic resources collections, laboratory management, plant health for genebanks
Understanding of international policies guiding access and benefit sharing for plant genetic resources
Proven publication record including scientific articles
Skills and personal qualities:
Strong organizational and planning skills
Strong team building skills
Good communication and writing skills
Terms of appointment: The initial appointment will be for three years with the possibility of renewal contingent upon individual performance and availability of funds. ILRI offers a competitive remuneration package paid in US dollars.
