The International Water Management Institute (IMWI) and the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seek to recruit a highly competent and dynamic Post Doctoral Fellow to participate in the up-coming Phase II Challenge Program on Water and Food (CPWF) Nile Basin project 3, focused on targeting integrated rainwater management strategies. The primary purpose of this position is to provide analysis of linkages between socio-economic and bio-physical factors influencing the uptake of rainwater management strategies. The work will also entail the investigation of potential impacts of these interventions on the varied socio-ecological systems in the Ethiopian highlands. The Post Doctoral Fellow will work in an inter-disciplinary team in a project that will investigate the suitability of rain water management technologies and strategies to the varied bio-physical as well as socio-economic systems found in the Ethiopian highlands.

Location: The position will be based in IWMI East Africa and Nile Basin and ILRI Office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Duties & Responsibilities:

* Providing expertise in spatial analysis and modeling
The Post Doctoral Fellow will develop and apply a framework for linking water management interventions to spatially-defined extrapolation domains.

* The project work will require i) field work and extensive interaction with partners on the ground, ii) documentation and quality control of a wide variety of spatial and survey data; iii) interpretation, modeling, and analysis of spatial and non-spatial data, iv) the preparation of research reports, journal articles, seminar papers and other scientific materials for the dissemination of research results.

* The Post-Doctoral Fellow will be required to work with interdisciplinary teams, comprising of both local and international partners.

Qualifications:

* A Ph.D. in Geography, Agricultural Economics, Natural Resource Management or related field

Experience:

* Experience in the application of Geographical Information Systems in projects related to socio-economic applications, agriculture, water or natural resource management

* Spatial Statistics and modeling

* Experience in both bio-physical and/or socio-economic impact assessments

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

* Demonstrated ability to design surveys and work independently in the field

* Competence in quantitative applied research methods, and strong quantitative and analytical skills

* Advanced skills in Geographical Information Systems (preferably Arc/Info and associated Software)

* Computer literacy, with skills in handling and quality controlling large volumes of spatially referenced data

* Good communication and writing skills, with a good command of both oral and written English

* Demonstrated ability to prepare project documents and research publications. A record of relevant peer-reviewed publications is a major advantage

* Ability to effectively establish priorities, plan, organize and monitor own work in an interdisciplinary and multiple task environment

* Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with people in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity

* Previous working experience in developing countries is an advantage.

Salaries and Benefits: Post doctoral contracts are available for two years and are non-renewable. IWMI and ILRI offer a competitive remuneration package paid in US dollars.
