Survey Expert - International Development Research - Tanzania

EDI Tanzania is a research company that specialises in data collection for clients in the international development community, such as the World Bank, Millennium Challenge Corporation and national governments. EDI’s primary focus is in implementing large-scale socio-economic surveys in Tanzania delivered through CWEST™ Survey Software on mobile technology. For more information about EDI, see www.edi-africa.com.

EDI Tanzania now seeks a Survey Expert to lead the design and implementation of its surveys.

As the selected applicant, you will use your expert international development survey knowledge to lead and be responsible for survey design, sampling, instrument design and testing, ensuring high quality data and preparation of final data-sets. You will liaise with our clients and be involved throughout all stages of the project cycle from initial tender preparation through to final report writing. You will be supported in your role by an experienced field management and data processing team, and a pool of trained and experienced interviewers and supervisors.

You will have the opportunity to use your survey expertise to support the clients of our sister company who own the CWEST™ Survey Software, as their clients move from using paper-based to electronic questionnaires (PAPI to CAPI). You will have the opportunity to guide and support external organisations (e.g. statistical bureaus) through the cultural, procedural and management changes that they require to successfully implement surveys using mobile technology, and support them in setting up, configuring and managing their surveys.

This exciting role provides the opportunity to live and work in Tanzania and for other international travel. There is also the possibility for this role to be based out of the UK but with periods of time spent in Tanzania, particularly during the design and piloting stages of the survey.

A successful applicant should have a postgraduate degree in Statistics, Economics or similar, and a minimum of 5 years post-graduate experience, ideally in the field of international development research. In addition, the applicant must possess:

• Significant experience in Survey Design;
• Familiarity with listing exercises and two-stage random sampling;
• Experience of data collection in developing countries;
• An excellent knowledge of data-entry and analysis programmes; (CSPRO, STATA etc)
• Experience with CAPI would be advantageous;
• Experience in analysis of data from developing countries;
• Strong communication skills;
• Excellent written and presentation skills;
• An ability to work within a multi-cultural team;
• A proven ability to meet tight deadlines and willingness to work flexible hours;
• A strong attention to detail;
• An enthusiasm for living in or significant travel to developing countries
• A high grasp of standard Microsoft software programmes and a high level of familiarity and comfort with use of technology

Work permits for Tanzania would be applied for on your behalf.

Working arrangement:
The position is full time and is ideally based from EDI’s offices in Bukoba, Tanzania. Other international travel will also be required. There is an opportunity, if the applicant prefers, to based from the UK, but with periods spent in Tanzania.

To apply please send your CV, covering letter and indication of location preference to seapplications@edi-africa.com by 5.30pm on Monday May 24th 2010.
