Better Cotton Initiative (BCI)
Location: Geneva, Switzerland
Last Date: February 18, 2011

Job Title: Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Coordinator
Job Status: Full time, permanent contract

The Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) has been established to respond to the impacts of cotton cultivation and aims to promote measurable improvements in the key environmental and social impacts of cotton cultivation worldwide to make it more economically, environmentally, and socially sustainable. BCI is working with organisations from across the cotton supply chain and interested stakeholders to facilitate a solution for the mainstream cotton sector. The BCI's approach is to develop a market for a mainstream commodity - Better Cotton - which will focus on reducing globally significant environmental, social and economic impacts to bring long-term benefits for farmers, farm workers, cotton farming communities and the environment.

It is essential for the BCI that changes as a result of working with the Better Cotton System and growing Better Cotton are measured and reported. This requires effective processes for monitoring, evaluation and learning that articulate a theory of change from farm activities to grow Better Cotton; BCI member activities; and BCI Secretariat management to BCI’s long-term objectives and 2012 goals. In particular, by the end of 2012 it will be essential to know if growing Better Cotton has inherent benefits for cotton farming communities across continents such as an increase in the financial profitability of growing cotton, reduced use of inputs, improved working conditions, improved health, or improved fibre quality.

The BCI Coordinator for Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning will work closely with the BCI team, across the supply chain, across countries, and with a range of BCI Implementing Partners. The role is primarily responsible for ensuring that BCI has an integrated approach to learning, is adaptive, and reports accurately on the results and effectiveness of the collective global effort of many people and organisations. As BCI is in its start-up phase of implementation, this role is particularly crucial in supporting the end-of-phase evaluation to enable BCI to shape its standard, systems and approach to better enable positive change to take place towards more sustainability in the cotton sector globally.
