RESEARCH ASSOCIATE – (Grain Quality)

Background: The Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) is seeking for a highly qualified Research Associate (Grain Quality) at the GSS (General Support Staff) level, to be based at its temporary headquarters in Cotonou, Benin. 

About AfricaRice

The Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) is an association of 24 African member states and one of the 15 international Centers supported by the Consortium of International Agricultural Research Centers (CGIAR). The Center’s mission is to contribute to poverty alleviation and food security in Africa, through research, development and partnership activities aimed at increasing the productivity and profitability of the rice sector in ways that ensure the sustainability of the farming environment. AfricaRice is temporarily headquartered in Cotonou, Benin. 

Position:     Research Associate – (Grain Quality)

Category:  GSS 

Responsibilities: 

Under the supervision of the Head of the Grain Quality, the Research Associate will assist him in carrying out his tasks, he/she will be in charge of the following tasks:  

·        Construct a daily plan for activities to be conducted in the physiology and grain quality laboratories

·        Organize laboratory training for new comers (orientation training)

·        Provide training in new techniques to laboratory technicians and students

·        Provide individual and group with training and arrange capacity building of NARS partners

·        Oversee the maintenance of laboratory equipment

·        Oversee the ordering of new equipment and consumables

·        Check for the availability of workspace in the laboratories and inform the Unit Head

·        Set rules and guidelines for working in the laboratories

·        Ensure the proper utilization of equipment

·        Report on activities in the physiology and grain quality laboratories

·        Publish papers in international refereed journals and conference proceedings  

Requirements:

·        MSc or PhD degree or equivalent in plant physiology and food chemistry

·        Long experience in laboratory management and equipment

·        Good knowledge of plant physiology and food chemistry and experience in rice plant cultivation

·        Strong oral and written communication skills in French and/or English with a good working knowledge of the other language.

·        Ability to work with other scientists and partners

·        Ability to work under minimal supervision

Terms and Conditions

This is a regionally-recruited position and the appointment is for two years with possibility for renewal.
