Background: The Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) is seeking for a highly qualified Research Assistant (Grain Quality) at the GSS (General Support Staff) level, to be based at its temporary headquarters in Cotonou, Benin.

The Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) is an association of 24 African member states and one of the 15 international Centers supported by the Consortium of International Agricultural Research Centers (CGIAR). The Center’s mission is to contribute to poverty alleviation and food security in Africa, through research, development and partnership activities aimed at increasing the productivity and profitability of the rice sector in ways that ensure the sustainability of the farming environment. AfricaRice is temporarily headquartered in Cotonou, Benin.

Position: Research Assistant – (Grain Quality)
Category: GSS

Under the supervision of the Head of the Grain Quality Laboratory, the sucessful candidate will assist the Laboratory Manager in carrying out analytical work and in the general the running of the laboratory, he/she will be in charge of the following tasks:

• Supervision of the Research Technicians and Observers in the laboratory
• Supervise experimental field trails for subsequent grain quality evaluation
• Carry out grain quality evaluation of samples from field trails and others received from breeders from Africa Rice outstations
• Statistical analysis of results obtained from grain quality evaluations using the appropriate software
• Assist in the development and adaptation of Standard Operating Procedures for analysis in the laboratory
• Ability to carry out bibliographical searches and writing of technical reports and other scientific publications in English
• Any other activities necessary for the proper functioning of the grain quality laboratory as may be determined by the Head of the laboratory or his representative.

• Possess a Master’s degree in Biochemistry, Food Science or related Biological Sciences field;
• Have experience of at least five (05) years in a similar position especially in the area of food chemistry and food analysis.
• Be conversant with basic Standard Operating Procedures of cereal grain quality analysis
• Be fluent in English. Additionally, a working knowledge of French will be an advantage
• Have good computer skills with experience in using data entry software (Microsoft Word, Excel or another spreadsheet program) and statistical analysis.
• Should have a spirit of initiative and be able to work under minimum supervision.

Terms and Conditions
This is a regionally-recruited position and the appointment is for two years with possibility for renewal.
