Post-Doctoral Fellow (PDF) in Remote Sensing and GIS
(for mapping abiotic stresses in rice systems)
The Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) is looking for a highly
qualified
Post-Doctoral Fellow
in Remote Sensing and GIS
to
join its Sustainable Productivity Enhancement Program.
ABOUT AfricaRice:
The Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) is one of the 15 international agricultural
research Centers supported by the Consultative Group on International
Agricultural Research (CGIAR). AfricaRice is also an autonomous
intergovernmental research association of 24 African member states. The mission
of AfricaRice is to contribute to food security and poverty alleviation in
Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), through research, partnerships, capacity
strengthening, and policy support on rice-based systems, and in ways that
promote sustainable agricultural development based on environmentally sound
management of natural resources.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Post-Doctoral Fellow
will
be based at the temporary headquarters of AfricaRice in Cotonou, Benin and will
work under the supervision of the Program 2 Leader. She or he will be
responsible for:
§
Evaluating and applying methodologies for mapping the distribution of rice in
different ecosystems in Africa using remote sensing, GIS and national
statistics;
§
The
development, validation and application of innovative approaches to map abiotic
and biotic stress distribution in rice production systems in Africa;
§
Performing spatial analysis in a GIS environment to identify suitable areas for
adoption of stress-tolerant varieties by combining remote sensing obtained maps
and survey data;
§
Prepare presentations and publish research results in peer-reviewed journals.
§
Developing research proposals, and
§
Undertaking any other duties as requested by the Program 2 Leader.
ESSENTIAL
REQUIREMENTS:
The successful candidate should have:
§
a PhD
degree in Ecology or Agriculture with a specialisation in remote sensing
applications, or a PhD degree in Geo-information Science (remote sensing) with a
strong background in agriculture and environment;
§
at
least two years’ experience in using remote sensing software like ERDAS Imagine
or ENVI;
§
experience is handling large data sets;
§
experience in the use of various types of satellite images such as WorldView,
Quickbird, Spot, Landsat, Aster, ResourceSat and MODIS;
§
strong analytical skills as well as knowledge of spatial statistics
§
strong communication skills are required in either English or French, with a
good working knowledge of the other.
§
ability to work effectively as a member of a multi-disciplinary team as well as
take responsibilities for tasks with minimal supervision
DESIRABLE
REQUIREMENTS:
§
Experience in the use of GIS software like ArcGIS;
§
Programming skills, preferably in IDL;
§
Working experience in rice areas, and
§
Strong scientific publication record.
