Afghanaid, an international NGO (UK registered) working in Afghanistan for last 30 years, has a mandate to facilitate and support Afghan women, men and children in their fight against poverty, inequality and vulnerability. Our priority sector areas are food security, sustainable livelihoods, rural enterprise development, local governance, and physical community infra-structure with cross-cutting themes of children rights, gender equality, community development and disaster risk reduction. We are a knowledge-based learning organization that works with both right bearers and duty holders through grassroots programming as well as advocacy and policy initiatives.
Were looking for Deputy Managing Director (Programme) with the following role and specifications.
The Role:
As a senior leader and manager of Afghanaid, the DMDP is a member of the Afghanaid Directorate, the advisory body to the Managing Director that reviews and participates in all major organisation-wide management decisions. As a member of the Directorate, the DMDP is expected to assume the corporate interests of Afghanaid and in this respect DMDP will be required to attend other meetings, including occasional meetings with the Board of Trustees of Afghanaid in the UK, as and when required. Major responsibilities of the post will focus on Programme Design and Development, Programme Implementation, Peoples Management, Operational Management, Budget Management, Risk Management and Representation.
Competencies & Skills:
Post graduate degree from an internationally reputable academic institution in relevant research based discipline is essential (development, management or economics). Further qualifications in relevant subject and experience with field based research are desirable. Excellent knowledge of poverty reduction strategies, rights-based community development, engagement with public duty bearers, social mobilization and empowering approaches of long-term development programming (e.g. PRA) is required. Previous work experience of managing teams to deliver high quality work meeting tight deadlines in sustainable livelihoods of small producers and small enterprise development sector as well as in local governance is essential. Minimum of 15 years in development and humanitarian sector is required, of which at least last 5 years in senior strategic leadership and management roles at head office level managing field programme operations.
Proven strategic and operational management ability and inter-personal skills team player and problem solving and leadership skills is essential. Demonstrative evidence of ability to make fast decisions and manage personal stress triggered from working in high demanding work environment with security risks. Proficiency in most common computer software including word processing, spreadsheets is a must. Proficiency with databases is an advantage. A willingness to live, travel and work in isolated and possibly dangerous locations is required. Fluent in English (spoken and written) is required. Knowledge of Dari is desirable. You will have commitment to empowering and rights-based approaches to support poor Afghan women and men in securing their rights. Ability to manage conflicting priorities in personal workload and sensitivity to Islamic culture is essential.
