PDF in Plant Biotechnology
(Specializing in phenotyping for drought and marker assisted breeding)

The Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice, ex-WARDA) is seeking for a highly qualified Post Doctoral Fellow (PDF) in Plant Biotechnology to be based at its temporary headquarters in Cotonou, Benin.

About AfricaRice

The Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) ex WARDA is an association of 24 African member states and one of the 15 international Centers supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). The Center’s mission is to contribute to poverty alleviation and food security in Africa, through research, development and partnership activities aimed at increasing the productivity and profitability of the rice sector in ways that ensure the sustainability of the farming environment. The Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) ex WARDA is temporarily headquartered in Cotonou, Benin.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will be part of a multi-disciplinary team working on rice and will work under the direct supervision of the Head of the Biotechnology Unit. He/she will be mostly involved with the daily implementation of the phenotyping and genotyping activities of the MARS project funded by the Generation Challenge Programme (GCP) and will work in close collaboration with the ecophysiologist, molecular biologist, breeders and biometrician.

SPECIFIC DUTIES
His/her specific tasks will include the following:
• Establish – in collaboration with the ecophysiologist and breeders – a field phenotyping platform for drought tolerance in three partner countries
• Establish – in collaboration with the ecophysiologist – a rain-out shelter at AfricaRice
Set up– in collaboration with the biometrician, ecopysiologist and breeders – protocols for phenotyping of breeding material for drought tolerance and yield potential for field and controlled conditions
• Be involved in the genotyping of the MARS population
• Set up– in collaboration with the biometrician and breeders – the database and manage experimental data
• Train and strengthen the capacity of the national agricultural research system partners
• Report on project research activities and prepare posters
• Publish papers in international refereed journals and conference proceedings
• Undertake any other duties as required by the supervisor




QUALIFICATION

The selected candidate should have:

• A PhD degree in plant genetics, physiology or equivalent
• Research experience on drought tolerance in crops
• Knowledge of experimental designs and statistical analysis of data
• Knowledge and experience on rice research will be an advantage
• Strong oral and written communication skills in English and/or French with a
good working knowledge of the other language.
• Excellent communication skills in either English or French, with a working knowledge
of the other
• Proven ability to work efficiently as a member of a multi-disciplinary team
• Ability to work under minimal supervision


DURATION OF THE APPOINTMENT

The appointment is for two years with possibility for renewal.
