Mirebalais Hospital Project Coordinator
Partners In Health
Location: Mirebalais, Haiti
Last Date: August 22, 2011
Organizational Profile:
Partners In Health (PIH), co-founded by Paul Farmer and Ophelia Dahl, and headquartered in Boston, MA, is an internationally recognized, non-profit organization whose mission is to provide a preferential option for the poor in health care. Through its service delivery, training, advocacy and research, PIH works globally to bring the benefits of modern medical science to those most in need and to serve as an antidote to despair. PIH has major programs in Haiti, Peru, Guatemala, Mexico, Russia, Rwanda, Lesotho, Malawi, Burundi, Kazakhstan, the Dominican Republic, and Boston, working tirelessly to lessen the joint burden of disease and poverty.
This is an exciting time for PIH as it is going through a period of significant growth. PIH played a vital role in the response and reconstruction of Haiti following the 2010 earthquake, and these efforts have resulted in both a broadened scope of work and heightened visibility for the organization. As the work continues to expand, PIH seeks individuals committed to the mission and values of the organization (see PIH values) to join the team.
Overall Responsibilities:
The Mirebalais Hospital Project Coordinator will ensure that the many volunteers and visitors to the Mirebalais Hospital site have robust support and accompaniment from PIH before, during, and after their journeys, so that their experiences working with PIH are safe, positive, and productive. The coordinator will work closely with the hospital project team to ensure that the nature and timing of all external visits is compatible with the project's needs, and will serve as a central coordinating contact for both the visitors and the project team on all Haiti-based logistical matters related to these visits. Finally, the coordinator will be expected to provide consistent, respectful, and patient accompaniment to our visitors who have limited experience traveling in resource-limited environments, seeking to assure that they return from Haiti eager to work with PIH again in the future.
Specific Responsibilities:
-Serve as overall in-country logistical coordinator for all external visits to the Mirebalais Hospital site, including volunteers and other partners (i.e. subcontractors, VIPs, ZL and PIH employees, etc);
-Act as the primary day-to-day point of contact for approved volunteers and other visitors for the Mirebalais project while they are in Haiti, including facilitating their understanding of the challenges of travel in Haiti, ensuring they have a full understanding of PIH's protocols and safety precautions for visitors, and diligently managing their expectations;
-Assume full responsibility for all in-country logistical arrangements (airport transfer, vehicular needs, meals, accommodation, etc) for visitors from the time of their landing in Haiti until airport departure;
-Coordinate all international travel with the Mirebalais Hospital Volunteer Coordinator to assure safe and timely travel to and from the US;
-Personally receive most visitors at the Port-au-Prince airport, accompany them to the site and their residence, and deliver a thorough in-person briefing and orientation during and after site transfer;
-Monitor the quality of visitor accommodation, meal, and transport arrangements, and initiate changes or improvements as necessary;
-Work closely with project staff to coordinate appropriate site-based activities in advance of visit, and brief project staff on visitors' background, goals, and agenda;
-Serve as the primary point of contact for visitor issues should they arise;
-Develop processes and materials to ensure a smooth and positive visitor experience (pre-departure and welcome packets, amenity packs, on-site entertainment and relaxation options, etc);
-Collaborate with Boston-based teams on logistical preparation for major public events (hospital opening ceremony, etc) to ensure a positive experience for large numbers of external visitors;
-Liaise with Boston-based development, communications, and other teams to develop and execute overall visit strategies for high-level "VIP" visitors;
-Facilitate and reinforce PIH processes and policies aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of visitors, including detailed planning and preparation for contingencies and a real-time awareness of any and all security concerns;
-In the event of any visitor emergency, serve as the primary coordinator for all necessary response activities;
-Execute other tasks related to ensuring and enhancing the quality of visitor experience at Mirebalais, as specified by the project team.
Qualifications:
-Five years relevant work experience, with demonstrated ability to take initiative, manage relationships, and demonstrate excellent judgment.
-Solid relationship-building skills; ability to interface with external visitors from all walks of life (including key high-level visitors) and PIH staff.
-Strong people management experience, including an ability to get along with an array of personalities across diverse cultures, and an ability to patiently and respectfully accompany visitors with little or no experience in resource-limited settings.
-Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral).
-Substantial experience living and working in resource-limited environments, including a demonstrated ability to be flexible and effective in the face of unexpected conditions.
-Solid organizational and planning abilities for balancing multiple tasks and responsibilities.
-Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively in a team.
-Conversational French and/or Haitian Creole abilities (preferred).
