Deputy Project Director (Sure Start Project)

PATH is a US-based international nonprofit organization with the mission to improve the health of people around the world by advancing technologies, strengthening systems, and encouraging healthy behaviors. PATH’s India program is based in New Delhi with sub-offices in Bhopal, Hyderabad, Lucknow, and Mumbai. PATH in India has developed a diverse portfolio of public health programming in the fields of immunization, infectious and vector-borne diseases, health technology commercialization, vaccine development and introduction, HIV and sexual and reproductive health, and maternal and newborn health. PATH maintains a diverse base of funding in support of its work in India that includes bilateral and multilateral donors as well as several private foundations.

PATH’s portfolio in maternal and newborn heath in India covers a range of activities that includes the Sure Start Project. Sure Start is an initiative intended to catalyze sustainable improvements in maternal and newborn health through effective community action in seven selected districts of Uttar Pradesh and seven selected urban sites in Maharashtra. Supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as part of its “Community Health Solutions” program, the project has been designed to complement and support the Government of India’s commitment to improving maternal and newborn health (MNH) through synergies with the National Rural Health Mission and the second phase of the Reproductive and Child Health Program (RCH II). Sure Start expects to achieve its objectives by promoting integrated attention to both maternal and newborn health, and supports the scaling up of promising approaches through focusing on household and community action, and by complementing initiatives that focus on clinical facilities and overall health systems.
PATH seeks applications to recruit a Deputy Project Director for the Sure Start Project based at Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.

Responsibilities
• Work closely with the Director: MCHN, India to implement and monitor activities of the Sure Start project.
• Assist in identifying new funding opportunities and help in developing proposals.
• Interface with PATH colleagues, and key external stakeholders including state government officials; partner NGOs and donor community.
• Provide assistance in mentoring, supervising and managing other team members and ensure that they learn from and contribute to each other.
• Develop annual work plans and budgets for Sure Start and ensure that these are implemented and monitored on a regular basis.
• Prepare reports to be submitted to the donor as per the project requirement.
• Document key processes, findings and learnings in project implementation for sharing with external stakeholders.
• Provide periodic briefings/ updates on project status, obstacles and issues.
• Serve as a senior representative of Sure Start project to external stakeholders.

Required Skills:
• Demonstrated ability to conceive project designs and write proposals.
• Demonstrated excellence in developing, managing, and supervising professional staff.
• Demonstrated effectiveness in building and maintaining strong partnerships with public health agencies.
• Demonstrated project management and MNH technical skills.
• Proven ability to build and maintain strong partnerships with public health agencies, donors, project partners, and government counterpart.
• Successful experience managing milestone-based projects within budget and time constraints.
• Fluency in English and Hindi.
• Ability to travel extensively.

Qualifications:
Master’s degree in medicine, public health, or any other relevant discipline with seven years of experience and at least two years of experience in managing a public health project. Extensive experience in and enthusiasm for working with diverse stakeholders in the public, private, and community sectors.
