 Micronutrient Initiative India (MII)

1.    Identification

Position Title:

Technical Advisor, New Delhi

Reports to/Position Title:

Country Director, MI India Trust (MII)


2.    Overall Purpose/Broad Function:


  • Within the framework of the MI India Trust’s objectives and strategic and operational plans, supports the Management in technical aspects of the micronutrient programs in States specified by the Country Director and Deputy Country Director, MI India Trust


3.    Key Duties and Responsibilities:



·         Assists Deputy/Country Director in development of State-level and Program level strategies

·         Take part in India Planning Meetings and MI Regional Planning Meetings as required.

·         Is part of overall technical team of MI and as such may be required to take direction from MI Chief Technical Officer and play a role on the MI technical team which could require from time to time various global meetings outside of India

·         Ensure the technical integrity of programs and program proposals

·         Provide technical advice to programs, State Program Representatives and other MI India Trust officers as required

·         Develop IEC, training modules, monitoring tools; has final call on technical matters but must be in a timely manner

·         Part of development team in PCN process

·         Manages consultants on technical matters

·         Inputs on TORs for formative research and technical specifications

·         MI’s representative on technical committees as required by Country Director

·         Develops training for MI India Trust staff on micronutrients

·         Organizing external expert training for MI India Trust staff and extenders

·         Attends conferences and conventions as required

·         Liaise with GoI and Partner technical officers

·         Make technical briefing notes for CD

·         Assist Country Director and Deputy Country Director at their discretion on technical matters

·         Repository for data, Government policies guidelines and new research

·         Keeps abreast of latest developments in the field

·         Any other specific task assigned by Country Director as required

·         From time to time may be required to accompany Regional Office and Head Office staff on field visits


4.    Supervisory  Responsibilities:

·          This position may supervise consultants from time to time.


5.    Education/Professional Designations/Experience:

·         A professional degree in medicine or doctorate preferred in any of the nutrition, public health, health management, international development and/or a related field.

·         Excellent technical knowledge of human nutrition and of the role of micronutrients would be an asset.

·         Good knowledge of government policies and programs to address nutrition in India as well as of the role of industry in nutrition in the country.  Good knowledge of other programs that intersect with nutrition and provide a platform for action (e.g. health programs, livelihoods, social safety nets).

·         At least 10 years of work experience with industry, government agencies, NGOs, community groups, and/or UN agencies (preferably a combination of experience in at least two of these and preferably in nutrition in a technical capacity). 



6.    Language Skills


Fluency in Hindi and English (Reading, Writing & Oratory Skills) is a prerequisite.  Knowledge of other languages spoken in India would be an asset.


7.    Travel Requirements

Frequent local and occasional regional travel


8.    Other Specific Skill Requirements:

§  A result-oriented approach and proven ability to manage, track and coordinate complex multi-partner large-scale programs.

§  Ability to network and negotiate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders to achieve the objectives of the program.  The position will particularly require a strong ability to engage and negotiate with senior government officials at national and state level in India.

§  Ability to assess programmatic risks and develop and manage effective mitigation strategies.

§  Ability and willingness to travel frequently, mainly within India.

§  Strong leadership skills and ability to work independently and generate innovation.

§  Strong communications skills (oral and written).  Ability to effectively represent the program in various fora. Ability to develop and implement a communications strategy for the India program and to ensure its delivery.

§  Ability to use effectively tools and systems for financial planning and tracking (e.g. disbursement tracking systems).

§  Good computer skills, including MS Office programs

§  Ability to work under minimal supervision

§  Ability to work under pressure
