An estimated 190 million children under the age of five suffer from vitamin A deficiency worldwide, a circumstance the makes infants and children highly susceptible to sickness and death from such common diseases as measles, malaria, diarrhea and acute respiratory tract infections. Vitamin A supplementation is simple, cost-effective, and has the single greatest potential to improve global health. Founded in 1994, Vitamin Angels is an entrepreneurially minded, mission-driven non-profit organization that focuses on reducing mortality and illness among infants and young children by connecting them with vitamin A, as well as promoting physical and cognitive development among infants and young children by connecting them with essential multivitamins.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Vitamin Angels seeks a creative, dynamic Director of Development to serve as a key member of the executive management team and oversee an entire range of development efforts. The Director of Development will be responsible for soliciting cash donations for program growth while establishing annual fundraising targets for the department. S/he will lead efforts to hire appropriately-qualified development staff, as well as to manage, mentor, and supervise the team in a manner appropriate to a matrix management organization. This person must also help to build and position the Vitamin Angels’ brand through communications and marketing, including social networking and online social media. While Vitamin Angels is headquartered in Santa Barbara, CA, the Director of Development may work remotely from any location.

QUALIFICATIONS: A minimum of seven to ten years experience raising major gifts for a non-profit organization or leading the marketing/sales unit of a for-profit is required. The ideal candidate is an optimistic, entrepreneurially-minded leader who is experienced in building and supervising a development team, as well as working collaboratively with a non-profit Board of Directors. A proven record of cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major cash donations from corporate sponsors (including lump sum cash donations or generating cash through cause-marketing promotions), high-net-worth individuals and/or foundations is necessary; and experience in generating gift-in-kind donations is preferred. S/he must be a successful relationship-builder with experience in marketing and/or communications, as well as a willingness and ability to build new levels of engagement. Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential, as well as an availability to travel to meet with donors and partners.
