ADB seeks qualified professionals to fill this vacancy in its Economics and Research Department (ERD):

STATISTICIAN 

Job Purpose:

Collect, compile and disseminate reliable and timely economic and social statistics of regional member countries (MCs) of Asian Development Bank (ADB), and provide technical assistance to ADB operations and  capacity building of developing member countries (DMCs) on statistical methods in support of strengthening the analytical base for ADB’s Strategy 2020 and operational agenda.  Work within broad policies and objectives with supervision for unfamiliar or critical tasks. 

Expected Outcomes:

a.         Research Work

•       Collect, analyze data quality and produce reliable and timely economic and social statistics of regional MCs including researching data from international sources to supplement official statistics.

•       Preparing of questionnaires, identifying and deciding on sources of data and evaluating suitability of data.

•       Participate in methodological research and provide analytical support in statistics and related fields.

b.         Knowledge Management

•       Prepare statistical outputs, review the accuracy and completeness of the outputs and maintain documentation, including updating of existing statistical databases.

•       Participate in the production of ADB’s annual statistical data book and related statistical releases, ensuring data quality.

•       Participate in and contribute to relevant internal and external training, conferences and other activities for advocacy, dissemination and knowledge building of statistics and statistical capacity building.

c.         Capacity Building

•       Participate and lead within one’s own field of expertise, in the design, processing and administration of technical assistance (TA) projects towards capacity building in one or more of the following fields: national accounts and related macro economic statistics; financial statistics and, household and establishment surveys.

•       Organize technical meetings, workshops and training programs in these areas as appropriate.

•       Lead missions to formulate and administer technical assistance projects, prepare terms of reference, supervise and review the work of consultants.

d.         Operations Advisory Support

•       Provide technical advice and counsel to ADB staff and operations teams on macroeconomic and social statistical methods and statistical capacity building initiatives.

e.         Staff Supervision

•       Provide leadership and support to reporting staff.

•       Supervise the performance of reporting staff, providing clear direction and regular monitoring and feedback on performance.

•       Ensure the on-going learning and development of reporting staff.

Immediate Reporting Relationships:

The position reports to: Assistant Chief Economist, ERDI

The following staff positions report to the Statistician:  National Staff and Administrative Staff 

Relevant Experience and Other Requirements:

Specific criteria include

•       Suitability to undertake the responsibilities mentioned above at the required level

•       At least 6 years of relevant professional experience with knowledge in technical operations of a national statistics office, various methods of data collection, compilation and dissemination, or other related area

•       Knowledge of various statistical databases maintained by international organizations

•       Excellent oral and written communication skills in English

•       Preferably with international working experience 

Education Requirements:

A university degree in Statistics, Economics or related fields; preferably at post-graduate level or equivalent.
