PURPOSE:
The Communications officer will promote the work and profile of the
Federation and support the communications needs of the IRCS. |

Specific duties and responsibilities:
Based on an assessment of needs, prepare a comprehensive and
realistic plan of action for the information function in the assigned
area.

Meet
and liaise with the international media, inform them of the
activities of the Federation and National Societies, and any
related developments
-
Actively contact (in cooperation with the Media Service)
international media to arrange interviews for Red Cross
spokespersons in the country
-
Maintain and update a list of relevant journalists and media
contacts in country.

Issue
media advisory and press releases as necessary
-
Publicize the Federation's World Disasters Report and other
relevant publications
-
Travel
to the field as necessary, and offer advice on communication issues
to programme managers/ Head of India Office
-
Regularly write articles for Federation publications.

Set up
practical electronic communication links with the outside world
-
Identify story ideas and news opportunities and market them to the
local and international media in cooperation with the media
service.

Provide regular written updates to the Federation and produce
background material for the media, visitors and other interested
parties; promote the Federation through written publications in
consultation with the Publications Service and operational
departments

Work
closely with the information and other staff of the National
Society, to facilitate their access to the media, develop their
press and information systems and to train, develop and support
their staff

Provide information to media visitors and representatives of the
Federation and other National Societies, and accompany them on
field visits as appropriate

Liaise
with international, government and non-government agencies, share
information and collaborate with them as appropriate
-
Brief
new staff and delegates on their role in media relations, and
advise the delegation on its relations with the media
-
Produce timely, accurate and regular financial and narrative
reports on information activities for the Federation and for donors
-
Promote and improve knowledge of the Principles and Mandate of the
Red Cross
-
Promote where appropriate the visibility of the Federation, its
emblem and its operations

Qualifications and experience required:
Good mental and physical health
-
Five
years experience working in journalism or in communications.
-
Experience of working for a humanitarian aid organisation in a
developing country.

|
The following skills would be an asset:
Self-supporting in computers (Windows, spreadsheets, word processing)
|
