The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) is an international conservation NGO headquartered at the Bronx Zoo in New York City working to save wildlife and wild lands and to meet global conservation challenges in over 50 countries in Africa, Asia, the Americas, and the worlds oceans. The Africa Program is the largest of WCSs field programs, with approximately 1,100 staff in 12 country programs (Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Kenya, Madagascar, Nigeria, Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Southern Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia), mostly focused on conserving 17 landscapes (see www.wcs.org/Africa).
WCS is the largest Conservation NGO in the Republic of Congo and has been working with government, community and private sector partners to achieve conservation in multiple landscapes across the country for almost 2 decades. Due to program growth, the WCS-Congo Program is currently looking to appoint a Deputy Country Program Director. The responsibility of the WCS-Congo Deputy Director will be to provide programmatic support to the WCS-Congo Program, Country Director in Brazzaville and the field. This support will include but not limited to:
Participate in strategic planning for the WCS-Congo Program, including the elaboration of Terms of Reference, implementation plans and budgets for new projects
Provide technical assistance to Project Directors in the implementation of existing work plans
Oversee the development of new projects including the drafting of implementation plans, drafting project documents and submission of grant proposals.
Review research protocols and provide technical assistance to project directors on research projects where necessary.
Work with the Project Directors and the Financial Director to insure compliance with donor requirements in the execution and reporting of grants.
Provide technical assistance to insure that Project Directors adhere to WCS-NY, WCS-Congo and ROC government rules and regulations.
Coordinate reporting from the field to insure quality and punctuality of reports.
Coordinate program operations and logistics
Key Qualifications
An advanced degree in wildlife biology, conservation, or another field relevant to Deputy Director responsibilities
At least several years African field experience at the level of project director or above
Substantial experience in project or program management, personnel management, administration, and fundraising
Knowledge of conservation biology, practical conservation, and African conservation issues
Passionate commitment to African conservation and enthusiasm about a career in conservation management and administration
Excellent, fluent spoken and written English and French.
Terms of Employment
The position is permanent, conditional on performance, based at the WCS Congo office in Brazzaville. A generous benefits package includes retirement, health, and other benefits. The position reports to the Congo Country Director.
