The BBC World Service Trust (WST) is the independent international charity of the BBC which uses media to advance development worldwide. As part of one of the world’s leading media organisations, we are committed to improving the quality of people’s lives in developing and transitional countries through innovative use of media. Our Research & Learning (R&L) Group focuses on four key activities including providing projects with audience and market insights to guide project strategies. As a Research Manager based in London within R&L, you will manage all aspects of audience research activities conducted to inform the strategy, content and quality of the Trust’s media development.

More about the Department
We are funded by external grants and voluntary contributions, mainly from the UK's Department for International Development (DFID), the European Union, UN agencies and charitable foundations. We work in partnerships that include governments, broadcasters, civil society institutions, UN agencies and international Non Governmental Organisations (NGO’s). Our key activities also include conducting qualitative and quantitative research, building capacity in audience research skills & methodology and documenting and disseminating the learning from the Trust’s projects internally in addition to the wider development community.

The Role
Leading work on a new Research and Communications project on climate change in 7 countries in Asia you will also develop and own the research design of this project. As Research Manager, your role will include working closely with the Project Director on all aspects of project strategy as well as liaising with and representing the WST and R&L to a range of stakeholders. Whilst managing project research budgets, overseeing the commissioning of all research and negotiating and liaising with research agencies, you will find yourself at the centre of a varied & challenging climate change project.

More About The Role
You will design all research inputs for the project, determining the appropriate strategy, methodologies and analysis protocols. You will oversee the implementation and delivery of all research and ensure the quality and completion within budget and deadline requirements, as well as recruit, manage and train project research staff based in London and internationally. The position will be London-based and will involve international travel, sometimes at short notice.

You will bring your experience of working in the field of climate change as well as your extensive knowledge of the politics and economics of climate change in the Asia region. You will also have an understanding of key issues around climate change mitigation and adaptation. With strong experience of qualitative and quantitative research techniques, you will possess the knowledge of their application for media and/or development projects and also strong SPSS data analysis skills.

More about the Requirements

With the ability to quickly analyse, interpret and synthesise an array of primary and secondary data, your previous experience of managing fieldwork and adapting methods to challenging and constrained conditions will also benefit you. From your previous experience of conducting cross-cultural research and/or research with diverse, multi-lingual audiences you will also have strong presentation skills and a track record of presenting to audiences from the grassroots to the senior level. Spoken and written proficiency in major Asian languages would also be desirable.
