BBC World Service Trust is the independent international charity of the BBC which uses media to advance development worldwide. Our mission is to improve the quality of people’s lives in developing and transitional countries through the innovative use of media. BBC Janala is part of English in Action (EiA), a groundbreaking initiative which was launched to raise the language skills of 25 million people in Bangladesh by 2017. We’re funded by UKAID (Department for International Development) and we’ve been contributing to the economic growth of Bangladesh by providing English as a tool for better access to the world economy. As Head of Project, you’ll take overall responsibility for ensuring that BBC Janala meets its agreed objectives, which includes the launch of a beginners’ ELT course across television, online, radio, mobile and print in early 2012.

Expanded Department


We utilise the media and mobile phones to improve perceptions of learning English and provide access to low-cost learning materials. Aimed at those who have missed out on quality provision at school, over 26 million people have already accessed learning via TV, mobile, web and through lessons in national newspapers. As well as this, there is also our innovative use of drama and game shows including our popular TV drama Bishaash, which is South Asia's first supernatural detective series

Role


You’ll manage relations with a wide range of stakeholders including EiA partners, media leaders, Government Organizations and many others connected to the project. With the exciting next phase of the programme having just commenced, you’ll oversee the launch of the new Adult Learning Course, lead the development of new work under the EiA project, attract further funding and direct the long term sustainability of the work. From the design and implementation of activities meeting the project aims to the management of the budget, this is a varied role and challenging role.

You’ll work with the Country Director to manage an array of relationships with government, donors and project partners and you’ll also manage a diverse team of international and local staff. As well as ensuring deadlines & objectives are agreed & met, you’ll negotiate and mediate any conflicting views/priorities that may arise and provide reports for both internal and external stakeholders. You’ll also ensure that BBC Health and Safety guidelines are observed and that you understand the needs, interests, and contexts of the BBC Janala audience.

Requirements

We need an entrepreneurial educationalist or an experienced development practitioner with a background in non-formal education for adults and or the media. It’s essential you have experience of senior project management with demonstrable ability to effectively manage a large-scale complex project. You’ll a proven track-record in international development and experience in the use of media to achieve development goals.

We also need your strong financial management skills, with proven experience managing large budgets and accurate reporting to stakeholders. As well as strong English communication skills, both written and verbal, you’ll be an excellent people manager with a demonstrable creative ability.
