Position Description
Based in our Seattle office, the Controller is accountable for the accounting operations of the organization that include the production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of the accounting system and accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the organization's reported financial results, and ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles and not-for-profit accounting regulations.
Overall responsibilities:
Issue timely, accurate and complete financial statements.
Serve internal and external stakeholders through the creation, delivery and interpretation of financial management reports.
Oversee the operations of the accounting department.
Manage cash flow, cash balances and investments.
Specific direct or indirect responsibilities:
Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures
Maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions
Monitor and manage payroll, accounts payable and accounts receivable
Manage outsourced functions (payroll tax payment vendor, temporary help services, etc.)
Manage MIP software for Seattle-based operations, including payroll and HRIS, as well as QuickBooks software for internationally-based operations
Oversee the accounting operations of the field offices including systems, transaction-processing operations, and policies and procedures
Oversee compliance with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements
Review and document review for bank reconciliations
Manage the production of the annual budget
Manage annual audits
Preparation of the financial component of the corporate annual report
Supervise and provide training for accounting staff
Support field office finance managers
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Education: An undergraduate degree in accounting. A CPA and/or MBA are highly desirable.
Experience: A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible accounting experience that includes the most or all of the duties described above.
Management Skills: The ability to organize a wide array of financial activities and processes, as well as the ability to convey financial information in a useful and constructive manner to non-financial individuals and teams.
Work Habits: Include but are not limited to accuracy, efficiency, thoroughness, regularity, timeliness and punctuality, as well as a strong drive for excellence in work product and personal performance.
Interpersonal Skills: The ability to work in support of and collaboratively with a range of people at all levels, including Landesa employees both international and domestic, the management team, board members, donors, contractors and subcontractors, outside vendors and services suppliers, and other administrative staff members.
Teamwork Skills: The ability to both lead and work as a member of teams, including consensus building, communications, and leadership skills.
Communications Skills: An exceptional ability to translate financial data into usable information for a wide spectrum of internal and external stakeholders. The ability to communicate well verbally and in writing, including the ability to make and use distinctions as to type, frequency, tenor, and levels of communications, depending upon the circumstances, audience, recipient, and content.
Software Skills: The ability to proficiently use MIP, QuickBooks, and Microsoft Office products including Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
This is a regular, full-time position with little to no travel requirements. Compensation will be based on experience and qualifications, and includes a generous benefits package.
