Rice is life for millions of people around the world. At the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), a team of more than 1,000 world-class scientific and support staff is working to reduce poverty through rice science. To support these research activities, we are seeking an agricultural economist to lead, coordinate, and implement analysis of evolving on-farm production constraints and farm-level effects of modern technologies and sustainable crop management practices for rice farmers.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The person hired will conduct farm-level analysis using household survey and secondary data. He/she will work in an interdisciplinary setting, providing feedback to biological scientists on farmers’ technology needs and the suitability of new/improved technologies and constraints to adoption. Experience in the ability to use microeconomic theory in analyzing producer decision-making in an uncertain decision setting and advanced estimation techniques is essential in fulfilling the duties of this position.
REQUIREMENTS
The successful candidate will have a PhD degree in economics, agricultural economics, or a related field, with emphasis on quantitative methods and analysis, with a minimum of 5 years of postdoctoral experience for scientist and 10 years for senior scientist. Having excellent written and spoken English, he/she will have strong knowledge of quantitative methods for analyzing farm-level data, a strong record of academic-oriented professional achievement, and knowledge of econometric software such as R and STATA. Knowledge of modeling software (e.g., GAMS) would be an asset.
