Summary of the Media and Civil Society for Transparent Governance (MCSTG) Program:
This program builds upon IREX’s ongoing activities in Iraq to develop the media sector, improve civil society and government cooperation, and promote participatory governance. This program has the dual objectives of 1) improving professionalism and sustainability of Iraqi media and 2) increasing the capacity of indigenous civil society advocacy and watchdog organizations to hold their governmental and legislative officials accountable.

Summary of Position:
The Watchdog Training Specialist will be based in IREX’s Erbil, Iraq office and will oversee the training, technical assistance and mentoring program provided to Iraqi civil society organizations and media outlets to improve their ability to serve as effective watchdogs for their constituencies pushing for accountability, transparency and good governance in all levels of government. This person will work with a team of three Iraqi Program Officers who will be based in IREX’s offices in Erbil, Basra and Baghdad.

Description of Responsibilities:

• Develop basic and advanced watchdog training curriculum and training programs for CSOs and media outlets;
• Conduct and manage more general trainings provided to CSO and media participants and more specialized trainings, technical assistance and long-term mentorship activities for a select number of CSOs-- initially from the Erbil, Basra and Baghdad governorates;
• Support the formation of and activities for Iraq coalitions and networks promoting transparency and accountability within various sectors and government institutions;
• Work in coordination with and contributing to IREX’s Iraq Media and Technology for Community Development (MTCD) program staff and activities including supporting the development of all training units;
• Work with and develop the skills and capacity of a team of three IREX Iraqi Program Officers located in Baghdad, Basra and Erbil.
• Willingness and ability to travel in Iraq (e.g. Baghdad, Basra) and other countries in the region for trainings, networking and conferences;
• Other duties as assigned.

• At least 6 years professional experience working with civil society organizations on good governance issues; experience working with media outlets a plus;
• Organizational development experience;
• Experience working with various training methodologies and conducting direct trainings;
• Experience working in the Middle East preferred;
• Arabic and/or Kurdish language preferred.
